Douglas County Libraries improves WiFi service
Douglas County Libraries has dramatically improved coverage on its public wireless networks at all of its locations.
The improvement effort, done without interruption of service to patrons, improved signal strength from between 12% and 58% to consistently between 68% and 100% at Philip S. Miller Library in Castle Rock, with no dropped signals in the month of March, 2010.
In that month, Douglas County Libraries' wireless network served 1,519 distinct wireless computers, with none dropped off the network. Nearly 100 patrons used the network on an average day, with most accessing the network at the Highlands Ranch and Philip S. Miller Libraries.
Donations at work at Douglas County Libraries
Things are changing at Douglas County Libraries, thanks to generous donations – large and small – from county individuals, families and businesses.
Robert C. Sullivan, M.D., of Castle Pines, recently donated $25,000 to the Douglas County Libraries Foundation, with $10,000 dedicated to the opening of the Castle Pines Library last year. Hundreds more Castle Pines citizens rallied to raise an additional $40,000 toward the fundraising goal.
The remainder of Sullivan’s donation is helping to renovate the Philip S. Miller Library in Castle Rock. A cramped and crowded children’s space has been transformed into a bigger, sunnier spot where kids can browse and find books and other materials.
A Last Ride through Our Fathers' America with John Newkirk
Join the award-winning author of The Old Man and the Harley as he retraces his father’s 1939 cross-county ride to the World’s Fair and Golden Gate Exposition.
When young Jack Newkirk set off on his Harley-Davidson to see the World's Fair with a group of boys coming of age in the Great Depression, fun quickly morphed into gripping tragedy. Seven decades later, John Newkirk and his father Jack retraced Jack's epic ride. It is a story of Americana – of grit, guts and ingenuity – and a timely lesson from the Greatest Generation on how America can overcome her hardest challenges.
